Hello Matey,
Been looking at this for a while, can't do it for a few years as I've got other trips planned.
If I was doing it by car, book the rental from here, you can get much better deals, ask John Twigg as Daphne booked a car for her and Gemma to accompany us on our US riding trip this year.
I am planning to fly into Chicago from Manchester and fly back home from there too. The only carrier offering direct flights is American Airlines. Depending on when you book, and how far in advance, tickets are £450 - £700. Just keep an eye on prices every day on www.kayak.co.uk .
I would also need to book a one way flight back to Chicago from LA, again check american cheap flight sites online.
As far as bike rental goes, if you want a one-way hire e.g. pick up in Chicago and drop off in LA, HD rental do not do this. Tou need to check out www.eaglerider.com .
As far as accomodation goes I intended only booking the first and last nights (in Chicago) and having nothing else booked. If there are only 2 or 3 of you there are loads of cheap motels all along the route. That way you are not tied down to being in any one place at any one time.
If you want an idea, check out www.motel6.com , twin/double rooms from $40 (sometimes less!) per night, $20 dollars per person is a great deal !!!
Hope all my ramblings help.
Ade
